How is the cost of a stained glass commission determined?

Design Complexity
The level of detail in your design plays a big role in cost. A simple geometric pattern with clean lines will generally be more affordable than an intricate design filled with curves, fine details, or realistic imagery. More complex designs require additional time for both planning and assembly.

Size of the Piece
It probably comes as no surprise that larger panels cost more than smaller ones. Bigger pieces require more glass, more lead or copper foil, and more labor. However, size also offers an opportunity to create something truly striking and impactful.

Color Palette
This may or may not be surprising, but glass makers are not adding food coloring or dyes to molten glass to change the color. Instead, metals and metal salts are added to change how light travels through the resulting glass. Pink glass, for example, is typically made by adding gold to the molden glass before it’s blown or rolled out. This makes pink much more expensive that the blues and greens that are made with copper and other less expensive metals. Considering color, texture, whether the glass is in production or vintage, and whether it’s hand-made or imported all factor into the cost of the glass. That said, color is one of the most beautiful aspects of stained glass, so it’s always a balance between budget and artistic vision.

Installation and Framing
If your stained glass piece needs to be installed into an existing window, door, or frame, there may be additional costs for fitting, reinforcement, or protective glazing. Custom framing or hanging hardware can also add to the total.
